Designer Interviews Geometric Style at Rani Jones
Rani Jones is hot conversation among the fashion forward folk. With their successful debut and second season now under their stylish belts, Rani Patel and Lucy Jones are continuing their hard-lined approach, taking their geometric style to new heights. We caught up with the high end design duo to explore which angle they're now taking with their current Autumn and upcoming collections.
Rani Jones is not Lucy and Rani's first venture into the fashion world. Unlike their current high end fashion line, the girls previously worked together for a high street retailer. Lucy shares "We worked amazingly well together, and we are so similar in taste and style. We wanted to create something sustainable, and push our design skills further."
With a proliferation of ethical fashion labels, Rani Jones has succeeded in carving out an original niche for its label. Lucy tells us "We differ in our luxury fashion in that we take an edgy progressive approach but our collections are made in sustainable way." Lucy adds "There was a gap in the market, as not many edgy design labels were pushing the boundaries of sustainable fashion."
So how exactly are Rani Jones pushing the boundaries? Lucy states "We feel we're just trying in every way possible. We think about socially responsible principles and sourcing. We look at the whole life cycle not simply our fabric choices. We minimise energy use, and reduce our material waste, and we also look at the way we treat our suppliers. We think about how we are making a difference all the time."
Rani Jones' approach has paid off from the outset. Rani tells us "We started the label not knowing how we'd be welcomed. But we've had a fantastic response from the mainstream fashion media and ethical press - their approval is important to us. What everyone loves is the way we are making fabulous fashion without looking sterotypically green."
For a high end luxury label, we reckon Rani Jones is an investment well worth making. As a far cry from fast fashion, each Rani Jones piece is worked on to a very high standard, from the fabrics, finishes and detail put into it. Reflected in its price point is also its UK manufacture. Rani shares "We are not in the fast fashion arena. We offer the highest quality fabrics we can get our hands on for our luxury pieces."
Reflecting on their style and talking of their geometric signature look, Lucy tells us "Our inspiration comes from the Brutalistic architecture movement, like what you see in the Barbican and Tate Modern. It's very blocky, angular, and made according to geometric principals."
To create this blocky Brutalistic look, Rani Jones' current Autumn collection uses recycled organic denim, bamboo jersey, organic merino and British wool. And they've managed to recreate this angular look in their SS10 collection too, which we viewed with pleasure at the start of London Fashion Week.
For next year's Spring Summer collection, Minimal Monolithic, indulgent light fabrics are to be used. Think layers of luxurious soft structured organic silks standing out against recycled denim.
As pictured below, structured yet soft shoulders are at play throughout the collection giving the clothes a masculine angle while retaining a feminine edge.

And we're loving the introduction of colour, with muted bright pinks, oranges and bold greys and blues.

As our chat with Rani and Lucy draws to a close, they tell us they're currently designing 2010's Autumn Winter Collection. Tell us about that we ask. Lucy laughs "It's far too early for that I think! Geometry will be main focal point though." And going by the marked success of their current and past collections, this consistency can only be a good thing!
