Komodo

Visit Komodo - KOMODO is an affordable ethical fashion brand, established for over 20 years. Using a wide variety of natural, organic and recycled fabrics mixed with traditional hand made skills from Bali and the Himalayas across its womens, mens and footwear collections.

Traded fair since '88

The Komodo ethical fashion brand was established in 1988, with the specific aims of designing clothes, and creating employment in developing countries and also for Joe Komodo and his friends. Using natural, recycled and eco-friendly fabrics and dyes, mixed with the traditional hand made local skills. And above all, a fair deal for everyone involved.

Joe Komodo's Story

"It was 1986 when I started the business, recycling old Levi’s jeans into patchwork Jackets in Brick Lane. So now, 20 years later I can say... what a long strange trip it’s been!

Komodo was always about going back to the places I had loved so much as an early backpacker, and about working with small factories and local craftsmen to make an east-west collaboration that was good for both sides. We have seen many styles of fashion come and go ...and come back again! We have seen many shops and brands come and go too - we have had to bend in the wind, but have always stayed true to our roots, they have served us well.

We don’t often get the acclaim and attention of other bigger brands, but that’s ok with us. We have our admirers who know we have our own style and they keep going back to the independent stores to buy our collections, all across Europe, the States, Japan and in Asia too.

Our ethical fashion label is now enjoying a new growth spurt these days, attracting new and stronger retailers to take us more seriously as we continue to bring out innovative and impressive styles at very competitive prices. The new collection is closer to designer wear than street wear, but the prices are street wear and we are happy to keep the brand accessible and friendly." - Joe Komodo

MADE-BY

KOMODO is proud of their membership to the MADE-BY organisation. This certifies all of our products ethically traded. MADE-BY is an umbrella label used by fashion brands to indicate their clothes are okay: ie. they are produced in a sustainable manner.

CHARITY & COLLABORATIONS

The brand has always been less concerned with fashion statements, but more into lifestyle and life choices. Komodo is a member of the Tibet Support Group UK and also worked closely with The Free Tibet Campaign over the years. Komodo is the initiator of the ‘Brand Aid’ scheme, raising charitable donations through the fashion industry to build schools in Tibet, a supporter of the Sumatran Orangutan Society and also a key sponsor of the annual JAZZMANDU music festival in Kathmandu.

SI:SU

Visit si:su - Glamorous upcycled fashions with feminine, detailed yet bold style, si:su is the hot new label to hit the world of eco fashion.

BEHIND THE LABEL

In 2008, three Welsh based designers founded si:su, offering two lines of covetable womenswear clothing and accessories all made from recycled and reclaimed vintage textiles. Sustainability was woven into their eco-chic design philosophy from the start, reflecting shared concerns of si:su design trio Helen Stew, Hanneke van Ryswyk and Rachel Bryan for minimizing waste, as well as the fashion industry’s footprint on the environment.

si:su's love of vintage shops, flea markets and various art forms are clearly reflected in their unique style of clothing. Their creative designs reflect a sense of nostalgic elegance whilst still maintaining a modern edge and an undeniably feminine eco-sensibility with boldly mixed prints, vintage buttons, hand-sewn detailing and embroidery.

In Finnish, sisu means perseverance or strength of will, and the name si:su reflects their commitment to being ethical fashion activists. si:su have exhibited at the Ethical Fashion Show in Paris and also sell through high profile online sites such as The Natural Store, Green Trading, All Things Green and Econscious Market (US based).

To place an order with si:su directly, individuals as well as trade can email sisu.info@gmail.com. Visit si:su’s website and blog for more information or watch the si:su 2009 collection film online.

DESIGN PHILOSOPHY

All materials and fabrics used are 100% recycled or repurposed even down to the buttons and threads. You will always find gorgeous recycled vintage fabrics in stunning designs at si:su, used individually for a simple yet stylish dress or combined with contrasting patterns for eye-catching looks.

All garments are sewn and finished in South Wales, stimulating the local economy. The fabrics come from a local textile recycling plant, reducing their carbon footprint further.

With the seasons starting to merge, they have created pieces that can be worn throughout the year – these unique trans-seasonal pieces can be worn alone in the summer or layered up in the winter.

Womenswear Collections & Accessories

From adorable dresses and skirts to camisoles, capes and quirky 40’s inspired shirts, there is a delectable range of one of a kind pieces to choose from. The sweetest collection of bags are also available in pretty fabrics and colour combinations, adorned with large vintage buttons and intricate appliqué (all fully lined). Other accessories include handmade French knitted necklaces with vintage buttons, belts and head scarves.

si:su offer two ranges; si:su 'pure' brings together nostalgic, simple, pretty and practical pieces for everyday wear; whilst 'bijou' is feminine and romantic offering unique pieces for special occasions, in luxurious fabrics such as satins, silks and cottons, detailed with vintage ribbons and lace.

Curious Tales

Visit Curious Tales - Curious Tales creates eccentric upcycled designer jackets, corsets and accessories for fashionistas with an individual sense of style, as well as a range of quirky organic T-shirts. Influenced by Victorian silhouettes the label combines a passion for vintage clothing, twisted tailoring and storytelling.

Upcycled fashion for eccentrics

Using an eclectic mix of colour, pattern and texture, garments are upcycled into new pieces, blending pinstripe suits with vintage dresses, ties, jewellery, blazers, shirts and kilts. The range includes refashioned jackets, upcycled belts, recycled accessories and salvaged bags for men and women. Jackets are dissected and slashed, with conventional features such as collars, cuffs and pockets replaced in unconventional locations. Tie scarves are over printed so it looks like a flock of swallows has flown across your chest. There are upcycled jackets with collars cascading with ruffled ties, displaced collars which have been reworked as wings on the back of a jacket, and ties made into dramatic obi corset belts.

Printed with chandeliers, exotic birds, antique spectacles, and adorned with machine embroidery, buttons and ribbons, no two pieces are ever the same.

Each jacket has a tiny story stitched on the inside, of the curious character who may have owned it before. They are waiting for you to continue the tale...

Why not try this dramatic tail coat, a black suit jacket combined with a royal blue wool skirt, school tie and an 80’s vintage flock dress? It's perfect for standing out in the crowd!

Quirky Storytelling Tees

Curious Tales also sells organic T-shirts printed with quirky illustrations and the opening lines of a story which you can finish yourself online. The mens tees even feature headless bodies which allow you to become the character as soon as you put them on. The idea is to form a relationship with your clothing, get creative, and have a few adventures!

Why not go on an adventure with Bernard C. Periwinkle, a windsock maker from Somerset who likes to count snail trails at midnight, and once planted fireworks in his garden to see if they would grow…

Or Mr A.E. Dobinson, a collector of egg timers, who once sneaked into his neighbours’ field at midnight to paint his sheep like dalmatians…?

You can upload your endings under the "Tales" tab of the website, where you can also read continuation of the tales.

Curiouser and Curiouser

The label takes its name from the fact that recycled materials have already had a life and have stories to tell. Each jacket has a tiny tale stitched on the inside, of who may have worn it before. The Curious Tale of its former owner.

Designer Julie-Anne Graham says, “The idea is to spark the imagination. Who wore this before me? What were they like? What adventures did they have? And the jacket is even more special because of it. The clothes have already been on a journey. And they are waiting for you to continue it.”
